The Teacher Who Helped My Deaf Son Belong

Part of the Personal Anchor series – moments that root identity and meaning.

Cartoon-style personal anchor illustration of a Deaf child smiling up at his Teacher of the Deaf in a softly lit classroom. The teacher kneels to his level, hands mid-sign, while he beams with recognition.

Some people leave a mark on your child’s life without ever trying to.

For my Deaf son, that person was his Teacher of the Deaf.

She signed.

She understood him.

She saw his Deaf identity with pride, not pity.

And because of her, he didn’t just attend nursery, he belonged there.

She encouraged the staff to sign.

She helped shape the nursery into a Deaf-friendly environment.

She made space for his language, his culture, his way of being in the world.

And he thrived, not because the system was perfect, but because one person chose to show what Deaf-aware support should look like.

Watching him run into the nursery with excitement every morning reminded me of something important:

When Deaf children see themselves reflected, supported, and included, their whole world expands.

They grow with confidence.

They learn without fear.

They feel safe to be who they are.

And that is what she gave him.

A space where he didn’t have to work harder to fit in.

A space where his deafness wasn’t a barrier, it was simply part of him.

For that, I will always be grateful.

Did a teacher ever make your child feel truly seen?
