Deaf Identity Is a Strength, Not a Barrier

Part of the Personal Anchor series – moments that root identity and meaning.

Cartoon-style personal anchor illustration of a woman smiling widely and signing “I love you” with her hand.

One sign can carry a lifetime of identity and connection.

That small movement of the hands, so simple, yet so powerful, holds generations of language, culture, and pride. It reminds me that Deaf identity isn’t just about communication; it’s about belonging.

It’s why Deaf pride matters, and why visibility is everything. For my son. For Deaf generations.

That’s why I keep speaking up.

What symbols remind you where your sense of belonging begins?
