Children should never be the interpreter

CODA series

Symbolic photograph: A person’s hands hold a smartphone and a stack of documents while seated in a waiting area. Empty chairs line the background. The light is soft and even.

In some situations, children can quietly become the bridge between people, systems, and understanding.

When children are placed between systems and their parents, they are asked to carry a weight that was never meant to be theirs.

Children should never be the interpreter.

Children deserve to grow in safety, not in responsibility.

This reflection comes from my perspective as a Deaf parent, shaped by listening to CODA voices and stories over time.
