A Moment

I remember watching people receive management titles without the skills or grounding to lead.

The title gave them authority on paper.

But in practice, there was no guidance, no accountability, no protection for those beneath them.

Instead of leadership, there was deflection.

Instead of responsibility, there was positioning.

The title stood tall.

The substance did not.

What It Did to Me

It created confusion at first.

I assumed titles meant competence.

I assumed hierarchy meant experience.

But what I witnessed was something different: authority used as a shield, and responsibility quietly redirected downward.

It left me carrying weight that was not mine to carry.

Doing the work without the recognition.

Holding the standards without the protection.

Over time, it shaped a quiet distrust of labels.

I began watching actions more closely than words.

What I Came to Understand

A title is a position.

Leadership is a practice.

Power that relies on a nameplate is fragile.

Power rooted in integrity does not need announcing.

I came to understand that authority without accountability is hollow.

And that real leadership is measured by how safe people feel beneath it.

Respect cannot be demanded into existence.

It is built.

Where This Still Shows Up

It shows up wherever hierarchy replaces humanity.

In workplaces.

In committees.

In schools.

In organisations that protect status over truth.

And sometimes, it shows up in smaller ways, when people confuse visibility with capability.

Now, I notice the difference quickly.

I look for steadiness.

For ownership.

For those who uplift rather than elevate themselves.

Closing Line

A title may grant position, but only integrity grants authority.

Gentle Reminder: There is no urgency in awareness.
