Awareness
Sometimes, people assume nothing really changes for Deaf parents.
I've had moments where I explained an access need and felt like I was repeating myself.
Then, sometimes, something shifts.
A person understands.
A process changes.
An adjustment is made.
Assumption:
"Nothing really changes for Deaf parents."
Truth:
"Change often begins with awareness."
What often gets missed is that awareness rarely happens all at once.
It grows through conversations, experiences, and moments when people begin to see things from a different perspective.
Some changes are small.
Others have a lasting impact.
Being a Deaf parent has taught me that awareness can open doors.
But it shouldn't always depend on parents being the ones to create it.
What is one shift in awareness you've experienced this year?
This reflection comes from my experience as a Deaf parent. It reflects one family's reality, not every Deaf family's experience.
