Sometimes, people assume Deaf parents are naturally outspoken or always ready to fight for access.
I've written emails, attended meetings, followed up on requests and explained access needs more times than I can count.
Not because I enjoy doing it.
Because some things don't move unless someone speaks up.
For me, advocacy often begins when access has already been overlooked. What should have been in place becomes another email, another meeting, another explanation.
I'd rather spend that time parenting.
I'm not asking for special treatment. I'm asking for my children to have the same opportunities as other children.
Advocacy isn't the role I wanted.
It's the role I sometimes need.
REFLECTIVE QUESTION
What would change if access were planned for rather than left for parents to chase?
