I message the school, check visual alerts, join video calls and use apps to keep our family organised.
Technology is part of everyday parenting in our home.
People sometimes assume Deaf parents must struggle with phones, alarms or everyday technology.
But using technology isn't the same as having equal access to every feature or service.
A visual alert can provide information I might otherwise miss. Written messages allow me to communicate directly without relying on a voice call.
When technology depends entirely on sound, or a service offers only telephone communication, that can create barriers.
The difficulty isn't necessarily my ability to use technology. It's whether accessible options are available.
Technology doesn't limit connection in our family.
It supports it in ways that work for us.
REFLECTIVE QUESTION
What barriers might disappear if accessibility were considered when technology and services are designed?
