Emotional Expression
Sometimes, people wonder how Deaf parents express emotions to their children.
I've heard questions that assume emotions depend on sound, tone of voice, or hearing certain words.
The reality in our family looks very different.
My children don't need to hear my feelings to know when I'm happy, worried, proud, excited, or upset.
Assumption:
"Without sound, how do Deaf parents express emotions to their children?"
Truth:
"Emotion is seen as much as it is heard."
What often gets missed is that communication happens in many different ways.
Facial expression, eye contact, body language, and everyday interactions all carry meaning.
Being Deaf doesn't make emotion harder to share.
It simply means my children learn to see it as well as feel it.
How do you express care and emotion in your family?
This reflection comes from my experience as a Deaf parent. It reflects one family's reality, not every Deaf family's experience.
