Parenting Style
Sometimes, people assume Deaf parents rely more on their children when communication is needed.
I've experienced moments where people look towards my children instead of me, even when I'm the parent having the conversation.
The reality is much simpler.
My children are my children, not my interpreters.
Assumption:
"Deaf parents must rely more on their children to help them."
Truth:
"Parents remain responsible for leading, guiding, and making decisions within the family."
What often gets missed is that communication support and parenting are not the same thing.
Children may help at times, just as children do in many families, but responsibility still sits with the parent.
Being Deaf doesn't change my role as a parent.
It simply means some conversations happen differently.
