Extended Family
People often assume communication differences lead to disconnection.
Communication with extended family doesn’t always happen equally.
In many situations, Deaf parents are expected to explain, repeat, or adapt, while others continue as they normally would.
This is where assumptions create imbalance, not disconnection.
Assumption:
“It must be isolating if your relatives don’t sign.”
Truth:
“Connection is possible, but it depends on shared effort. It grows when communication is met halfway, not carried by one person.”
Connection doesn’t depend on hearing. It depends on willingness.
How do you maintain a connection with family members who communicate differently?
