Social Perception

Sometimes, people assume Deaf parents struggle in public spaces.

I've lost count of how many times people have looked at me differently when they realise I'm Deaf.

Whether it's ordering food, asking for help, speaking to staff, or managing everyday family life, people can be quick to assume struggle when communication looks different.

Assumption:

"Deaf parents must struggle in public spaces."

Truth:

"Communication may look different, but that doesn't mean we're struggling."

What often gets missed is that many challenges come from environments that aren't prepared for different ways of communicating.

When access is present, most of those barriers disappear.

Being Deaf doesn't make me less capable of navigating the world with my family.

It simply means I do it differently.

What helps you feel welcomed and included in public spaces?

This reflection comes from my experience as a Deaf parent. It reflects one family's reality, not every Deaf family's experience.
