Deaf Identity
Sometimes, people wonder what it is like when a Deaf parent has a hearing child.
I've been asked questions that assume difference automatically creates distance.
The reality in our family looks very different.
My children and I may not experience the world in exactly the same way, but connection isn't built on hearing the same. It's built through communication, shared experiences, and everyday family life.
Assumption:
"If your child is hearing, won't they feel different from you?"
Truth:
"Difference doesn't create distance."
What often gets missed is that families connect in many different ways.
Identity doesn't weaken those connections. It becomes part of who we are together.
Being Deaf isn't something that separates me from my children.
It's simply one part of our family's story.
