Social Life
Sometimes, people assume Deaf parents feel isolated from other parents.
I've been in situations where conversations moved quickly, access wasn't there, or everyone else seemed to connect more easily.
That can feel frustrating.
But it isn't the whole story.
Assumption:
"Deaf parents must feel isolated from other parents."
Truth:
"Connection exists in many different ways."
What often gets missed is that isolation is usually created by barriers, not by Deafness itself.
When communication is shared and access is present, relationships have space to grow.
Some of the most meaningful connections in my life have come through shared understanding, community, and people willing to meet each other halfway.
Being Deaf doesn't stop me from belonging.
It simply means belonging looks different sometimes.
What helps you feel part of a supportive community?
This reflection comes from my experience as a Deaf parent. It reflects one family's reality, not every Deaf family's experience.
