Hearing Technology

People sometimes wonder how Deaf parents can support a child who uses hearing technology.

I've been part of my Deaf child's hearing journey for years.

I've attended appointments, asked questions, learnt about his equipment and supported decisions along the way.

I don't hear what he hears. But that hasn't stopped me from learning how his technology works or being involved in decisions that affect him.

What often gets missed is that understanding hearing technology isn't the same as experiencing sound through it.

Being Deaf hasn't stopped me from supporting my child's journey.

I've simply learnt about it in my own way.

Because I'm his parent.

REFLECTIVE QUESTION

What assumptions do we make about a parent's ability to support hearing technology based on their own hearing?
