The Teacher Who Helped My Deaf Son Belong
Some people leave a mark on your child's life without ever trying to.
For my Deaf son, that person was his Teacher of the Deaf.
She signed.
She understood him.
She saw his Deaf identity with pride, not pity.
And because of her, he didn't just attend nursery. He belonged there.
She encouraged the staff to sign.
She helped create an environment where communication felt natural.
She made space for his language, his culture, and his way of being in the world.
And he thrived.
What I remember most is how excited he was to go each morning.
He wasn't simply attending.
He was part of it.
Watching that meant more to me than I can easily put into words.
As a parent, there is something deeply reassuring about seeing your child feel understood.
Seeing them welcomed exactly as they are.
For that, I will always be grateful.
Some people leave a mark on your child's life.
She was one of them.
