Confidence

Sometimes, people assume Deaf parents lack confidence before communication has even begun.

I've noticed that some people make assumptions the moment they realise I'm Deaf.

Whether it's at school, an appointment, or in everyday situations, people can sometimes direct questions elsewhere, simplify information, or appear unsure about how to communicate.

Assumption:

"Deaf parents lack confidence in hearing environments."

Truth:

"Confidence isn't the issue. Communication is."

What often gets missed is that confidence can be mistaken for hesitation when access isn't fully in place.

When communication is shared and accessible, confidence has room to show itself.

Being Deaf doesn't make me less confident as a parent.

It means I shouldn't have to work twice as hard to be heard.

What helps you feel confident in spaces where you are often misunderstood?

This reflection comes from my experience as a Deaf parent. It reflects one family's reality, not every Deaf family's experience.
